How the buy-by date works
Three dates decide whether, and when, you get paid.
Buy by
Own the shares by the close of the trading day before the ex-dividend date. This is the date Dividend101 reminds you about.
Ex-dividend date
The first day the stock trades without the dividend. Buy on or after it and the seller gets the payment; the price usually drops by about the dividend.
Payment date
The dividend arrives in your account, usually one to four weeks after the ex-date. You can sell before then and still be paid.
